They are best known as lizards that can change color to camouflage into their surroundings. Pranava Tripathi’s, 15 Chameleons, brings to mind, the famous lines from the timeless classic by Mohammed Rafi, “Is rang badalti duniya mein, insaan ki neeyat theek nahi…”

We’ve all known them, worked with a few, maybe even lived with one. They are human chameleons. Through guile & cunning, they know just what to say & do, to please the powers that be, along the way, as they make their way up the professional ranks to reach positions of power & then there are others who play the game of deception in their personal life. Human chameleons make a fascinating case study and it never ceases to amaze me that people fall for them, all the time.

Book 15 Chamaleons

Dark satire seasoned with a dash of humor, 15 Chameleons, is a brilliantly crafted collection of hard hitting & impactful short stories, by a remarkable writer, that will prick your conscience & compel you to think. In Pranava Tripathi’s stories, I came across, all kinds of people, who are morally corrupt, scheming, foolhardy, ingenious, crafty & naive characters & situations that most of us will be able to relate to. People who are too wimpy & weak to be real, to be honest with others about who they are, might get away with it for some time but eventually they are exposed & their magnificent house of cards come tumbling down. This book awakens the mind to the realization that there is no alternative to honesty and it is better to be known for our honesty & integrity, as no heritage is so rich as these.

A master storyteller, Pranava Tripathi’s writing is characterized by evocative intensity and he tells it, exactly like it is.

A book not to be missed!

ENGLISH VERSION (HINDI VERSION BELOW)

Pranava Tripathi’s “15 Chameleons”, a short story collection, is published by LiFi Publication in Delhi Book Fair on 30th August. Pranava, an IIM gold medallist and electronics engineer, works as Software Program Manager for Industrial Microcontroller. An industry veteran, he is a frequent presenter at industry forums including the famous Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). His literary work reflects his vast experience and the diverse knowledge that have come through living in many different countries and observing the diverse culture very closely. Four of his short stories are published in “Yours Lovingly”, an anthology of love short stories.

’15 Chameleons’ is collection of 15 short stories that highlight the normal, the mundane and the accepted issues which we have become so immune to that we have forgotten to question them, rather we have accepted them as a part of our lives. These stories depict a satirical caricature of our everyday life in the contemporary Indian society. The themes of the stories are the virtues, vices, emotions which we are all familiar with – fame, power, wealth, love and other human values, and showcase the willingness of the people from different classes to let go of these values. They are presented in a stark, unembellished style, devoid of pretensions. They are meant to shock, sicken and disturb. They are meant to wake us up to think what has changed since we first celebrated our freedom. The stories call for action to our collective conscience to rethink our values, attitudes, prejudices and priorities. This is about the real ‘us’ inspired by many incidents and stories.

Now Pranava is working on a plot for a fantasy, love story, Forget me. Please! which is based on paranormal love mystery.

Review of 15 Chameleons

Book review of 15 Chameleons by T Soumya, Chief Editor, YourStoryClub.com

In 1943, in the midst of a raging world war, Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami published his now beloved collection of short stories – ‘Malgudi Days’. The collection of 19 short stories set in the fictional town of Malgudi painted an idyllic picture of our society under the British Raj. To us, today, it paints a vivid image of a begone era.

A lot has changed since then. In the seven decades since India’s independence, the world saw the birth of a new country, its struggle through infancy and then, its growth to maturity. In these decades of long transformation, there is as much to be proud of as to resent. The spirit of community, brotherhood and unadulterated patriotism that characterised our founding fathers, have, slowly but alarmingly, given way to a volatile blend of cynicism, distrust and dogmatism. And that is what this book portrays.

Pranava Tripathi’s 15 Chameleons attempts the same to our contemporary society as ‘Malgudi Days’ did to our society then under the Raj. The stories in this collection are as much a satirical caricature of our everyday life as a blunt warning that a climate of decay has silently set in. They are presented in a stark, unembellished style, devoid of pretensions. They are meant to shock, sicken and disturb. They are meant to wake us up to think what has changed. And most importantly, it is a call for action to our collective conscience to rethink our values, attitudes, prejudices and priorities. This is about the real ‘us’.

I hope this book provokes you as much as it has provoked me to think. I hope it prompts you to bring about the change necessary to make bigger changes, the need of the hour in today’s society.
